Change E46 Temperature Gauge Buffer Range with BMW Scanner PA Soft 1.4

Here I would like to share a guide on how I chang my BMW E46 Temperature Gauge Buffer Range. The procedure requires BMW Scanenr PA Soft 1.4.

The following only applies to facelift cars; I'm sure the same can be done to prefacelifts, but the procedure will differ. Even on the facelift cars, the EEPROM addresses may vary.

Read your cluster's EEPROM with BMW Scanner 1.4.0. Open the resulting file with a hex editor and go to offset 0x34D (my edit: 0x340 may be the correct offset; either way, the codes will be identical). Take note of the following 8 bytes:

0x0F = 15ºC = Gauge Start (not sure about this one)
0x32 = 50ºC = First Notch (I know the ZHP guys say it's 65ºC, so it might represent the end of the blue)
0x4b = 75ºC = Buffer Start
0x73 = 115ºC = Buffer End
0x7D = 125ºC = 3rd Notch (or maybe start of red)
0x8F = 143ºC = Gauge maxed out

So as you can see, the buffer is 40 degrees in this case. I would change it to the following:

That still leaves a small buffer of 90º - 100º which is an appropriate range for the car. And if it's anything like the M3 (which also has a 10 degree buffer), small variations do cause it to wiggle around in the buffer zone; it's not noticeable on the non-M since the range is so wide. I haven't tried eliminating the buffer, but I imagine you'd set the buffer start and end values to the same thing (95ºC would be 5F) -- I'm not sure exactly how I'd scale the surrounding values, but you can play with that. (if you're wondering why I included the unbolded values, it's because NCS defines that whole region as the coolantgauge characteristic curve)

But I could not find offset 0x34D (nor 0x340) in my EEPROM so I sent him a line that looked very similar:

I chatted with the tutorial writer and from this, he deduced the following:

Worked like a charm. I used the values shown above, but you may want to play with upper range values depending on your driving style and operating conditions. Here's a chart that can help you do it (Added on 11/23):

Here are step-by-step instructions with PA Soft 1.4

1) Click on IKE.
2) Click "Read EEPROM"
3) Hex editor functions are in the lower left hand corner. Click the floppy disk icon to save the factory loaded file onto your desktop as backup.s
4) Make revisions from "factory" bolded values to "revised" bolded values shown above: Find the corresponding offset and move the cursor over the bytes to be revised. You can use arrow keys to move the cursor as well.
5) Click "Write EEPROM." Your cluster will flash and beep several times after completion -- and like magic, your gauge will now reflect more accurately what's happening under the hood.

Step-by-step guide on resetting BMW iDrive warning messages

I recently replaced my Brake pads on a 04 E60 and needed to reset the Idrive Information I did some google searchers and found the following information. There are two way to do it: use ENET EasyCoding scanner to customize the settings in iDrive or manually reset it. The BMW EasyCoding scan tool is 400 more dollars, thought I would just do it manually.

I tried the solution on my E60 and it worked great. I am thinking that other models with Idrive will work the same way, so I would like to share it here and hope it helps anyone.

Firstly turn on the ignition, set the odometer trip meter back to zero by pushing it once. Then switch the ignition back off again. (Do follow this step, otherwise you could not get to the "Service" menu).

Now let us do the resetting:

1. Switch the ignition on (so that the battery, Oil and Parking brake lights are displayed) and the key is ready to start the engine - but don't actually start the car.

2. Press the odometer reset button for between 5 and 10 seconds until a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the centre appears in the top window between the clocks (where the outside temperature / time or date normally appears) - this is the "Service" icon.

3. Release the odometer button briefly and press again straight away which brings up a picture of the Brake Fluid symbol (same as the one that the i-drive shows when you look at the Service menu).

4. If you want to reset the Brake Fluid interval for another 2 years then keep holding the odometer button until the word "RESET?" appears at the bottom of the lower window.

5. Release the button briefly and push it in again and hold for about 5 - 10 seconds until the new date appears in the bottom window. You can then switch the ignition off and the new Brake Fluid date will appear in the service menu on the i-drive screen next time you switch on.

6. If you want to reset the Oil, Microfilter or Brake Pad indicators then you will need to follow the same sequence as steps 1 and 2 above, but when you get to step 3 and the brake Fluid icon appears, just release the button and press again and the next service item will appear.

7. You can continue releasing and pressing the button until the required service item icon appears for the one you want to reset. Once it does then hold in the button in until the word "RESET?" appears again as in step 4 above. Once the word "RESET?" has appeared, you need to release the button briefly and hold it in again for about 5 - 10 seconds until it is replaced by the new service interval figure (as per step 5 above).

Mechanic guide on fixing BMW E46 Multiple Airbag Faults

Yesterday I came across a BMW E46 with the following faults (Through BMW Scanner 1.4 / INPA cable).

If you are a DIY-er, you may probably own one code reader only. That is ok. I often use BWM Scanner 1.4 for its simplicity and quick turnover diagnostic it offers, and sometimes use INPA just to confirm the codes are right.

After being a mechanic for 20 year, I can tell that usually when you have more than one of two, this is a sign something is wrong after the seat, not the seat itself.

I removed the passenger seat, connections were all very clean, nothing was cut off, and found the original equipments, including the seat occupancy sensor. I often see previous attempts of fixing airbag issues in there.

Then I notice the carpet is very wet. To find out the reason, I remove the carpet on the passenger side (Just lift it really) and noticed a nice puddle of water and the satellite sensor that is sitting here is all rusty. That is it, the issue has been identified. If this sensor goes belly up, you will have multiple faults on the airbag system. Next is to the sensor replaced.

See the white/green powder all over the sensor. It is dead basically.

So after finding a replacement and the carpet/car dried up, I unplugged the battery for a few minutes (Recommended when you do this before putting new parts in) plugged in the new satellite impact sensor and all the faults were gone, a part from the seat occupancy sensor itself.
No worries so I install a bypass, and now it is all good. A quick reset of the fault. Airbag light goes away.

I remove the key, turn on the car again, and the light comes up for a few seconds then goes away.

BMW Carsoft cable and software using experience

Just got the cables and Carsoft software from obdii365 in yesterday and got it all installed on an $84 IBM Thinkpad I picked up off of eBay. This evening, instead of installing my rear shocks, I had a chance to test out my BMW Carsoft 6.5 software on my 1999 540it BMW. I decided to set up another garage tool via a laptop running Carsoft and various other reference applications.

I purchased:

An IBM T23 laptop with 512mb from eBay. I installed a copy of Windows 2000 SP4. I chose this configuration as it was CHEAP and came with a serial port needed for Carsoft 6.5. Actually, I used one of these every day and know they were fairly durable. Good for the garage, so I wouldn't have to worry about banging it around. $86 US plus shipping. It came with a DVD player and AC power supply. I added a removable 2nd battery in place of the DVD to permit about 4 hours of total runtime away from an outlet.

A set of interface cables from Chinese seller obd365 and 6.5 software. It included two diagnostic port cables and a serial cable to connect to the Laptop. There is an interface that goes in-between the cables. Less than $50 shipped.

A neoprene slip case to not only protect the laptop, but protect it and the engine cover when I set the laptop up away from my garage, on top of my plastic engine cover. $16

I had:

A copy of Win 2000, SP4. I used it as it uses less memory than XP and has more than enough performance for Carsoft.

A Linksys N wireless card for connecting to my network.

There are two cables, one for the 20 pin connector on the passenger side aft of the airbox. The second cable is to pull data from the OBDII connector under the lower drivers side connector. This evening, I connected to and ran full diagnosis from the 20 pin connector.

A Targus AC/DC power supply to connect wherever.

A soft laptop carrying case for all the pieces.

I won't go into all the tests, but I will mention that I was able to run a general retrieve of all stored codes.

I was able to run some more specific retrieves on supported modules and erase status codes

Observe some live engine and switch data. All live data was done at engine idle. Went from cold to 109c operating temperature.

I found where you could roll windows up/down, lock doors and set preferences for locking the central locking system.

It will reset the service intervals as well. (I had none to reset...)

I'll try the OBDII connector a different day. I'll likely use it from inside the car to observe engine activity when underway.
