BMW ICOM diagnostic system has released to the third generation: ICOM A3. ICOM hardware contains 3 parts: BMW ICOM A, ICOM B and ICOM C. With all of BMW ICOM A+B+C parts and software HDD, it is able to diagnose and program BMW Cars, BMW Motorcycle, Rolls-Royce and Mini Cooper.

First of all, let’s explain the function of each part of ICOM.

ICOM A: Main adapter with OBD II connector for MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport), KCAN, DCAN

ICOM B (MOST interface): additional adapter for optic line, use USB connection with Icom A.

ICOM C (20PIN interface): adapter for old vehicles (before 2000-2001) with round 20-pin connector.

What's the difference among ICOM, ICOM A1, ICOM A2 and ICOM A3?

1) Appearance.

BMW ICOM and BMW ICOM A share the same appearance.

2) Software

ICOM and ICOM A software are called ISIS (ISTA-P) and ISID (ISTA-D). Latest version: 2013.01.
ICOM A2 and ICOM A3 software are called ISTA-D ISTA-P (or Rheingold version). ICOM A2 current version: 2015.04 ISTA-D ISTA-P software. ICOM A3 comes with 2015.02 HDD.

3) Firmware/Hardware

BMW ICOM A and ICOM A2 share the same firmware. Three firmware version optional: V1.1.8, V1.33 and V1.36. BMW ICOM A3 has the difference firmware/hardware version: V1.37

4) Function:

BMW ICOM A and ICOM A2 share the same function. But due to the old BMW ICOM A module have problem in the cooling and protection design, ICOM A2 adopts the whole aluminum shell body, using aerial explosion-proof connector; and it use the joint connection line which similar to the Mercedes-Benz SDCONNECT COMPACT 4.

And the new ICOM A3 has a higher version firmware which is able to receive a significantly more powerful processor and more storage capacity. A3 comes with robust aluminum box will help to avoid damage in harsh environments when using.

5) Operating system

ICOM can only be installed on Win XP O/S.
ICOM A1: Win XP and Win 7 64 bit O/S
ICOM A2: Win XP and Win 7 O/S
ICOM A3: Professional Win7 64 bit (NO win XP)

In conclusion:

BMW ICOM, ICOM A, ICOM A2 share the same firmware version and functions but differs in appearance.

The newest version ICOM works better in cooling, runs faster and uses more stable, not easy broken than older ICOM.

ICOM A3 can program all units for all BMW series, but not media.

BMW E-sys is the best coding software for F-series. Here is the step-by-step instruction of changing BMW F10 Werte values with ENET E-sys cable.

Tool needed:

BMW ENET (Ethernet to OBD) Interface Cable (cheap $16.99 in obdii365)
E-SYS software version 3.23.4
PSdZ Data V50.3 (extracting passwords: E*G@rqVa, PIN 2670)
A laptop running Win XP home

Instructions:

1. Connect the ENET (Ethernet to OBD) cable with vehicle via OBD socket
2. Wait until LAN network adapter in task bar has established limited network capacity
3. Open ZGW-SEARCH.exe
4. Open E-sys software
5. Click the connection icon
6. Select your F series model, selection Connection via VIN and click continue
7. Follow system prompt. Click "Read(VCM)”
8. Select CADF with a green check mark file under the module you want to read, select "Coding Read Data”
9. Close error report windows pops up
10. New option under CADF, a folder. Expand the folder and right click the file, select "EDIT FDL”
11. Browse the folder, you will find your option, for example KOMFORTSCHLIESSUNG-FB
12. Factory option set to nicht-active. Right click, select "Edit”
13. Then click werte value, click "Edit”

14. The option to change the value in the lower window. Change current value with new, click the button on the right

15. Change werte value==00 to werte value==FF, save settings

16. Open same file under "File Name”. It shows file name and location

17. The E-SYS software display new value name and werte value

18. Save settings
19. Right click FA, select "Activate FA”
20. Select CAFD file you just edited and select "CODE DFL”
21. When DFL coding completed. Close the error report windows.
22. Werte value changing procedure now is completed.
23. Exit the BMW E-sys software and disconnect theBMW ENET Cable interface from vehicle.

I can add spare keys with BMW Multi tool, works great, no problems.

2. BMW multi tool does all keys lost
Tried all lost with BMW multi tool a few times, no problem. But still I heard a lot of scary story about BMW multi tool wiped out the data, the problem these guys have is there's no backup if goes wrong.

3. BMW Multi tool work with CAS3/CAS3+
BMW Multi Tool work great with CAS3/CAS3+ for spare and all keys lost. I did a lot off.

4. Work with CAS3+: BMW multi tool VS original VVDI
One veteran from digital-kaos forum said: Original AVDI doesn't work for CAS3+ spare key 'as claimed'. I'll check out that BMW multi tool. AVDI for me never worked with CAS3+ with keys. Strange as goes to trouble of downgrading fine. Wonder if can do rest via eeprom - or that's what its basically asking in 1st place. Or then again, just use BMW multi tool by sounds of it.

5. One locksmith doubt and questioned: Anyone want to share any problems with multi-tool ?? any cases afterwards of damaging vehicle ?? I'm sure i've read some here but people don't comment after event.

Click on each component, you are able to view the detail wiring diagram of specific part of your vehicle

Press the magnifying icon, the wiring diagram will display in larger screen.
