Ncs expert code BMW 330D steering angle sensor

This post starts with BMW 330D steering angle sensor problem that after it replaced the 2 orange lights just keep coming back on. Then I was told to use Inpa read out fault code and NCSexpert to code the steering angle sensor, the final part are the guide on how to code the BMW 330D steering angle sensor with NCSexpert. Hope it helps.

Symptom:

Bought My BMW 330D yesterday and the chap told me he had the steering angle sensor replaced but it wasnt reset for the car, so i have got inpa and re calibrated it for the car however the 2 orange lights just keep coming back on, I have taken it for a drive as was told this often makes them go out but nope, they keep coming back…..am I doing something wrong or is it a faulty sensor?

The sensor was replaced with a new part, the garage supplied and fitted.


What I did:

Ive spoke to the garage who did the job and they said they were having problems communicating with the sensor to code it to the car, and that the guy who had it replaced was made aware and just took it as it was, they thing a possible wiring issue or ecu issue.


What BMW diagnostic and programming tool to use:

NCSexpert for coding


If you can read the codes from it (LWS) with BMW INPA there are no obvious communication problems. I can read the codes with inpa and erase them etc, but it simply will no recode the sensor. It has to be coded first before initialisation. This can be done with for example NCSexpert.

Whats ncs expert? were can i get it?

NCSexpert is a software for coding, part of the Ediabas/INPA package. You can’t code anything with INPA.

Highly recommend you cardiag.co.uk, it is available with ISTA-D ISTA-P which contain NCSexpert program, take the newest ISTA-D 3.56.1.002 ISTA-P 3.57.2.002 for example

PS:It worked perfect.

I hope you also have all the needed files for this job in the original NCS installation.

Here some instructions out of memory.

First select used profile, select expert profile (you might have different profiles depending on the installation).

Read ZCS, select body E46, select module KMB/EWS (doesn’t matter which you read ZCS from).

If you have have newer (post 2001) E46 it uses FA instead of ZCS. So Instead of Read ZCS, select Read FA, select body E46, select module AKMB/ALSZ (doesn’t matter which one you read FA from).

Then select "Back”, select "Process ECU”, choose LWS (can also be shown as LEW). Choose "Change Job” and select "FGNR_SCHREIBEN” (can’t remember if this is exact, this function writes VIN in the module). Choose "Execute Job”.

After VIN is written choose "Change Job” and select "SG_CODIEREN” (this will do the actual coding according to ZCS/FA features). "Execute Job”.

After this initialise the sensor. Unfortunately sometimes INPA doesn’t do this properly and you need DIS or ISTA software for the initialization.

Rheingold and INPA K+Dcan cable cannot recognize e39

Here is the customer solution to make ICOM Rheingold engineer software with BMW INPA K+DCAN interface. Put it here for sharing.

 

Disclaimer:

This is a customer solution, so obdii365 is not responsible for this. Experienced skills are required here, or you would be at risks to have a try.

 

Backgroud info:

The customer did with KDCAN cable from China. It worked good with INPA on vmware xp sp3 and saw connected car (BMW E39). But when he tried to use BMW ICOM Rheingold, it cannot see/ recognize the car.

 

PCB of this cable looks that:

Useful solution by he tried:

In Rheingold, he clicked on the wrench key logo (settings), then clicked on VCI Config and selected the first option as shown here:

The adapter was only bridging pins 7 and 8, so he was advised to go ahead and solder them together as shown here:

And after soldering, it works !!! Rheingold and K+Dcan cable can recognized and diagnose BMW E39.

How to install BMW INPA software driver on Win 10

Will BMW INPA software can be installed on Windows 10 and how?

 

Here is the customer solution:

 

install the drivers for INPA K+D-CAN cable (version with FTDI FT232RL chip only)

disconnect from the Internet because it is possible that the drivers are installed from Windows Update (if you want to use the latest home FTDICHIP then disconnect or reinstall)


why run the executable CDM 21216_setup.exe; It is compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows 7,


If necessary, you can download the latest version according to the OS on the site FTDICHIP

This is an interface / cable VCP (Virtual COM Port) so there are two features and therefore an installation in 2 phases if done manually

if using the automatic executable (.exe) offered on the site, then the 2 self install a result it's easier and without going through the Device Manager =>
then plug the INPA cable into a USB port


NOTE WELL PORT IDENTIFY THIS CAR ALONE WILL WORK AFTER SETTING IT WILL THEREFORE ALWAYS CONNECT THE CABLE ON THE PORT


in Device Manager there will be a new entry: "COM and LPT ports" / sérial USB Port (COM3) eg for now


Then you must configure the port that will emulate the virtual COM port 9 (eg. Default for Ediabas 7.3 patched) but it's tune to your install


Open Device Manager, choose COM Ports / USB serial port / port settings / advanced / set "COM 9" and the latency to "1"


finally install BMW Standard Tools, all versions are not compatible with win 7 and 64-bit architectures, so use the BMW STD Tools version 2.12, which includes a recent version INPA 5.0.6 and 7.3.0 Ediabas.

DIY BMW E46 coding with NCS Expert

This is a little NCS expert software tutorial on coding BMW E46. Aim to help if anyone has any questions and of course can carry out any coding changes.

 

 

Equipment:

NCS expert coding software

A hardware cable (BMW INPA K+DCAN cable/BMW ICOM etc)

 

First we will need to set up a coding profile within NCS expert.

1) Open NCS Expert.

2) Open up the ‘Expertmode’ profile.

3) Save as a new profile (give it a name, like the godfather or something powerful sounding).

4) Load the ‘godfather’ profile.

5) Edit it (file –> edit. Password is repxet).

6) Make sure under button ‘Individualisierung’ all options are crossed.

7) Make sure under button ‘FSW/PSW’, that ‘from CVT’ is chosen, and that the bottom two boxes are crossed.

Finally, press ‘consistence check’ and check it works.

9) Then press okay

You should now have a coding profile!

You read using the ‘Expertmode’ profile, and code using the ‘Godfather’ profile. (Ignore the other profile)

Once NCS is open Choose File from the top menu

Select Load Profile

Choose Expertmode profile.

Then Press F1 or choose VIN/ZCS/FA

Now press F3 or choose ZCS/FA f. Ecu

Select the model carE46

Chose the Module in which to read the ZCS/FA, In this case we select the top one. If that one doesn’t work for you, choose the next one below, etc until you find one that works. Bear in mind that the bottom two will not let you read all options. If you find that you cannot read the top one, then you may have a key programming issue (i.e. previous owner losing a key, and BMW not programming the new one properly), or that your car has had an ECU changed that doesn’t match the car’s VIN.

Upon seeing the below screen with the FG and FA Values displayed simply hit F6 or Back.

You will now get a list of installed modules that were identified when communication with the chosen "main” module as before.

Select the Module/ECU you would like to work with, In this case the GM5

Now you can choose READ ECU to perform a read out of the module.

You will get a NETTODAT.TRC file popup simply close it.

Navigate to the Work folder which resides in your NCSEXPER directory. You will locate a file FSW_PSW.TRC

This file was created when READ ECU was performed and contains the coding values for that module.

Remember this file is overwritten each time a read out of a module is performed. It would be advised to make a back up of this file in the event you need to restore coding settings. (Just right click and copy and paste the whole file on your desktop or somewhere you can remember in case there is any mistake, if you have this copy of original you can fix.)

NOTE:!!! AT THIS POINT, you have not done any programming, you have simplyreadthe module. You should make a copy as above, but at this point you can exit NCS & disconnect from your car…. and take your time to read this copy of the trc file, and decide what you want to change… and come back to it later. When you go to the next steps, this tells you how to actually change things in your car. If you make some mistake, use your original as the .man file to change them back…

THE NEXT STEPS ARE FOR ACTUALLY CODING TO THE CAR:

Once you have made a backup, Right click and rename the file to FSW_PSW.MAN

*Once you have a .man file and are ready to code your changes to the car, you can do this step, or if you prefer, DELETE the .man file in work folder, and start over again from top.. Just make sure there is only one .man folder in work and that this includes the coding you want to change in the car.

A heres a guide to car/key profile and button in NCS:

The typical sequence for the customization is as follows:

1. Button Select the "individualization”.

-> The operating side, the potential for the individualization ZCS FSWs customizable displays the selectable PSWs. The intended state of PSWs is marked with a prefix ‘S’.

2. Button Select the "READ”.

-> The actual state of the customizable PSWs FSWs is determined and with a leading ‘I’ marked.

3. Button Select the "TAKE OVER”.

-> The currently selected PSW becomes the new target value for the vehicle in the list of gänderten PSWs.

4. Button select "BROADCAST”.

-> The controllers of the vehicle in which PSWs have changed are encoded. Amended by promoting PSWs the list of changed PSWs.

Anyway, back to coding. Once you’ve made the changes you want, save the file.

Choose file and click save. (common mistakes here is saving the .man folder incorrectly as a .txt file, make sure when saving you have a .man file, not .man.txt! will not work. If problem saving, choose instead "save as” and where box says file type. Choose "all files” not text.

Now press Process ECU so we can tell NCS Expert what module we would like to code to.

Choose the Module and press ok. (Make sure this is same modules you read from!)

Now we are ready to code the PSW_FSW.man to our GM5 unit. Make sure the JOBNAME is set to SG_CODIEREN.

If it is not simply click ‘job’ and choose SG_CODIEREN. Make sure you’re using the module you previously read from: in this case the GM5 (Or the unit you will be working with)

Hit Execute Job to perform coding.

Underneath GM5 a status will appear initially saying CODING ACTIV and then CODING ENDED. Depending on size of file and can be a few seconds or a few minutes… very important not to disturb car or computer here… if battery dies, coding incomplete… you will have to use your back up… not very common, but it’s always possible! Always back up original!!

Once this is completed you may power off the car wait 10 seconds and repower up to see whether your coding changes have taken.

BMW ICOM Error “vehicle could not be identified”

Here is the possible solution to the connection problem with BMW ICOM A2 ista D 3.5 on BMW models like my F56 JCW.


Basic info:

tools: BMW Icom A2 wifi
software: IstaD tested versions 3.52 – 3.53 – 3.54
operating system: Windows 10 (Firewall dissabled)

model: F56 JCW


Here, Ista P 3.58 works flawlessly. But in Ista D KL15-30 are shown but no identification happens.
Every time I try to identify the car an error prompts:
"The vehicle could not be identified. Please check the access to the vehicle and check whether the testing-analysis-diagnosis has been activated”

BMW ICOM A2 status “Reserved” “Firmware” “Free”

As we all know,ICOM A2 Rheigngold/ISTA+can perform diagnosis or programming function with WIFI coennection only when the state is "Free”. but it is normal to see the the status "Reseved” or "Firmware”. Here is the instruction on how to make icom a2 state from "Reseved” "Firmware” to "Free”.

note; wifi connection is suggested to used during diagnosis, for sometimes wifi connection is not so stable that programming on BMW cars might stop or even do harm to cars.

ATTENTION:

how to solve "Reserved”

during diagnosis, if the state is "Reserved”, it means the program is occupied. to exit the program illegally should be remain Reserved and cannot go to diagnostics.

when you meet with "Reserved”, please unplug the ICOM mux or close at Easyconnect, then "Reserved” turn to be "Free”.

go to Easyconnect Utility to set IP address: 192.169.68.119, Mode: DiagBus, then click "ICOM Lock” and "Check” to check the battery voltage and ignition


how to solve "Firmware”

if the state displays "Firmware”, it means the ICOM firmaware need to be updated


Steps to update China BMW ICOM firmware:

1). Use your cable and connect ICOM to port

2). Power ICOM by 12V power adapter or from 1x DLC

3). Use your browser (IE) and browse 169.254.92.38:60080/

User name: root

Password: NZY11502

4). Click "Update Firmware”,and you can find the version of firmware.

5). Select ICOM-BootImage-XX-XX-XX.bin, set image type to "SYSTEM”, click "Send the file”

6). When it will say "Write the image file to the flash?”, click "Yes”, then the ICOM led it will been RED

7). When it will say "The SYSTEM IMAGE update was successfull”, click "Update Firmware”

. Select ICOM-ApplicationImage-XX-XX-XX.bin, set image type to "APPLICATION”, click "Send the file”,the file is big so it will take some minutes to finish have patience.

9). When it will say "Write the image file to the flash?”, click "Yes”, then the ICOM led it will been RED again

10). When it is ok, click "reboot”.

4. Open IE Internet Explorer, enter address http://169.254.33.45:60080/ if you update Perfect version BMW ICOM, log in with

6. Click "Update Firmware”, you will see ICOM firmware version information.

8. When it pops up "Write the image file to the flash?”, click "Yes”, then ICOM indicator light will turn red.

9. When it pops up "The SYSTEM IMAGE update was successful”, click "Update Firmware”.

10. Choose "ICOM-ApplicationImage-01-40-05.bin”, set image type as "APPLICATION”, click "Send the file”, it will spend several minutes since the file is a little bit large.

11. When it pops up "Write the image file to the flash?” click "Yes”, then the ICOM indicator light will turn red for the second times.

12. When it finish upgrading, click "reboot”.

13. Click "Home” – "Update Firmware”, you will find ICOM A2 firmware update to the newest version:
Current SYSTEM IMAGE version: 01.25.02
Current APPLICATION IMAGE version: 01.40.05

Additional Note:
Please be sure your computer is to obtain IP address automatically.

Double check the update tool icon and Run the update tool and Operate in accordance with photographs

  • Used the USB cable connected to obd2 scanner and PC, if connect success, the software on pc will shown as below

  • Cleck red rang , you can change the path , and find the update file which received.

  • Select update file and click [open] button.
  • Into the upgrade interface, wait for the end of upgrade

WARNNING:

Do not power off during upgrade!

Do not Plug or Unplug USB tools during upgrade!

 

  1. Start Update

Waiting for a few minutes. The software will update the scan tool.

Finish Update

When the update is finished , the screen on PC will show as below.

If update success, the software will display [Update success!]; if update not success, it will display [Update fail! Try again].

Press [finish] , the scanner is already updated ,and you can unplug the scanner from PC.
